Wrinkle-Smoothing Injectables

Wrinkle Smoothing Injectable ModelInjectable neurotoxins such as BOTOX COSMETIC® and XEOMIN® COSMETIC™ have become very popular in our downtown Calgary, Calgary Seton, Airdrie, and Cochrane clinics — with both women and men — for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles associated with aging. These wrinkles are typically caused by the repetitive muscle contractions that occur throughout the day as your face changes expressions.

Prescription wrinkle injections offer an appealing combination of proven safety, minimally-invasive treatment, and visible results. Simple, nonsurgical treatments disable the small muscles that create dynamic wrinkles, temporarily smoothing wrinkles around the eyes, lips, neck, and jaw.

Wrinkle smoothing injectables may be combined with other treatments for complete facial rejuvenation. Request a consultation with Dr. McWhirter to discuss a customized anti-aging treatment plan. Or call us at either 403-454-1244 (Calgary) or 403-945-0350 (Airdrie) or 403-523-1091 (Seton) to schedule an appointment.

Your Options

Prescription wrinkle injections are not the only nonsurgical modalities available to give skin a younger appearance by minimizing age-related wrinkles. Other options:

About Wrinkle-Smoothing Injectables

Neurotoxins, also called neuromodulators, are made of a purified protein that temporarily relaxes muscles. This benefits multiple areas of the face:

  • Vertical frown lines, crow's feet, forehead furrows, and under-eye wrinkles
  • Deep lip lines, such as smoker's lines
  • An overly pronounced jaw
  • Neck bands

Neuromodulators may help create smoother skin that looks younger, along with a more pleasant and relaxed look. Typically, up to 5 injections of botulinum toxin A are required in any given area. It can take several days, sometimes up to 2 weeks, to see the full effect of treatment. The cosmetic benefit typically lasts 3 to 4 months.

Safety of Neurotoxins

The safety and efficacy of neoromodulators is well-documented over the course of more than a decade of cosmetic use. Millions of men and women around the world successfully undergo these treatments each year. Nevertheless, side effects are possible. That's why it should only be administered by trained medical practitioners with experience using these wrinkle smoothing injectables.

Neurotoxin shouldn't be used in certain populations, including women who are pregnant or who are breastfeeding. It should not be injected in inflamed or infected areas of skin. It should not be used in individuals who suffer from neuromuscular diseases.

If adverse reactions with botulinum toxin A occur, they generally happen within a few days after an injection. The reaction is usually temporary, sometimes lasting several months or, in rare cases, longer. Clinical reports of side effects include weakness of muscles adjacent to the injection site. Muscle weakness remote to the site of injection and other serious adverse effects (e.g. "dysphagia," i.e. difficulty swallowing, when injected into the neck region) have been very rarely reported in the cosmetic application.

Wrinkle Correction Treatment

Wrinkle correction may be administered on its own or in tandem with filling agents or other skin treatments. On its own, a neurotoxin treatment takes only 10 to 15 minutes, with a series of quick injections using a very small needle. Most patients describe the feeling as a slight pinching sensation.

After the injections, a cold compress may be applied to help minimize redness and swelling at the injection site. Patients can immediately resume routine activities after a session.

Neuromodulator injection results typically take 2 to 14 days to fully develop, unlike dermal filler injections, which are noticeable immediately. Results typically last 3 to 4 months, but studies show results may be prolonged with regularly scheduled treatments. A maintenance treatment every 3 or 4 months may ultimately extend the duration of results and reduce the amount of product needed.

Common Questions

Do I need a wrinkle-smoothing injectable or a dermal filler?
Both treatments smooth wrinkles; however, they are typically used for different types of wrinkles on different areas of the face. Dermal fillers add volume — whether it's under a wrinkle, fold or in the lips — and the results are immediate. Wrinkle-smoothing injectables treat wrinkles caused by facial muscle contractions, such as crow's feet around the eyes and horizontal lines between the eyebrows. Results appear over several days as the skin returns to its normal position and gradually smooths out.

Will my face look frozen and unnatural?
No, we strive for natural-looking results. While you may have seen people who are unable to make natural expressions after wrinkle injections by other providers, the women and men who choose ReNue benefit from our extensive training and experience in performing these treatments.

Can wrinkle correction treatments prevent wrinkles?
Younger patients do choose these treatments as a preventative measure when wrinkles are beginning to develop. This approach can keep dynamic wrinkles from becoming noticeable and more difficult to smooth out in the future.
