Addressing Facial Asymmetry Without Surgery

Woman managing facial asymmetry with BOTOX and fillers

Facial asymmetry: it’s not as uncommon as you might think. While surgery has long been the go-to solution for uneven features, there are significant opportunities for nonsurgical management of facial asymmetry through the use of JUVÉDERM® and BOTOX COSMETIC®. At my Downtown Calgary, Airdrie, and Seton med spa locations, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful this approach can be.

A Case Study in Asymmetry

I saw the most beautiful customer last week. Truly, I mean she was a beautiful person inside and out. Unfortunately, she had viral nerve damage similar to Bell’s palsy some years back. Much of the nerve recovered, but she was left with weakness on the right side of her face. What was complicating matters was that over time, due to lack of nerve strength, her facial muscles were getting weaker and her face was becoming increasingly asymmetric. Her brow height, cheek elevation, smile, and chin symmetry were all being slowly affected. The sad part is that this incredible person was being psychologically traumatized by what was happening to her. This was affecting her self-confidence and how she felt inside. Learn more about her journey in this blog post.

Treating Asymmetry

In the office, I am constantly looking for facial asymmetry. Everybody has it to mild degrees due to genetic skeletal asymmetries, facial trauma, Bell’s palsy or even lying on one side to sleep over many years. It is not hard to see which side most people sleep on if they have a strongly preferred side. Even if correcting the asymmetry is not the core part of the treatment, I always have an eye for it, because it improves youthfulness and attractiveness in the face.

We are now understanding how to use BOTOX to relax certain muscles and JUVÉDERM to activate others. We’re seeing how much of a difference we can make when, for instance:

  • One brow is lower than the other.
  • One cheek is fuller than the other.
  • The smile is crooked and one side of the mouth lifts more than the other.

This is not easy. It would fall more into the artistry side of what we do at ReNue. But the outcome is always worth it.

Benefits of Injectables

It is highly rewarding when we can help the face appear less sad, less tired, less angry, or less saggy and take things a step further to improve facial asymmetry. Of course, it is easier to treat at an earlier stage when the asymmetry is subtle, and sometimes a surgical opinion can be warranted if there is extreme asymmetry. However, the beauty of injecting products that eventually go away is that we can continue to alter our treatments as we age and are not stuck with a permanent correction that initially might look good but over time will look artificial or not age appropriate.

Feel free to send us a picture or come in for a consult so we can have a look and see if we can help if this is something that is bothering you. As always, we will give you an honest opinion and clear expectations of how we might help.

Hi, I have an uneven smile and jaw line. Over the last few years I also noticed that my face has been looking more square as well. Is there a way to fix this?

    Thank you,

    Montana

Hi Montana. Thank you for your question. I am not sure how old you are, but over time asymmetry in the face can develop. We all smile stronger with one side of our face more than the other, for example. We have to see how your face not only looks in a neutral position but how it moves with various expressions to see how much correction is possible, but we often can help through the strategic use of Juvederm and sometimes Botox. As for a squareness to the jaw, this is something we treat frequently and through a combination of lifting the cheeks and reducing the lower jaw muscle strength, the improvement can be dramatic. We can create a more triangular or heart shaped face over time, which tends to look more feminine.
