Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an exciting hair restoration therapy we brought to Calgary, Seton, and Airdrie over 3 years ago that has taken some time to catch on. It is now starting to gain momentum in a big way because of the results we are achieving with this therapy alone.
What is PRP?
PRP is an injectable treatment (using needles) that aids in the rejuvenation of the body’s tissues. It has been more commonly used as an added therapy to improve surgery outcomes, especially in orthopaedics and plastic surgery. I remember first hearing about it when Tiger Woods had PRP therapy after winning the U.S Open with micro-fractures in his knee.
What are aesthetic uses of PRP?
We use PRP therapy to rejuvenate the skin of the face and in hair restoration. We treat fine lines around the eyes and mouth where other therapies might not be an option or the recovery time from other treatments like lasers might not be acceptable. When used for hair rejuvenation, PRP can help stimulate hair follicle development to give fuller, thicker hair. It can have a preventive role in improving hair quality and quantity in men and women who are not interested in hair transplants or medications to prevent hair loss. We also use PRP to speed up recovery time after laser resurfacing treatments.
How are PRP treatments performed?
The procedure is simple and natural. We draw several vials of your own blood at the time of your appointment. We then separate the platelets from the blood and inject them in a concentrated form just underneath the skin of the face or the scalp using a small, fine needle. It takes less than an hour for the whole process and is often combined with laser treatments, Juvederm® or BOTOX COSMETIC®.
Am I a good candidate for hair restoration with PRP?
Men and women who are in the early stages of hair loss are the best candidates for PRP therapy. This treatment effectively stimulates hair follicles that are declining, but it cannot revive hair follicles that are completely inactive.
When will I see results?
Improvement does take time as PRP rejuvenates the skin or scalp; results are often noticeable after two to three months. Follow-up treatments are necessary in most cases to achieve desired results. At ReNue, we are very excited about how this treatment—that we have been doing for years—is finally starting to catch on. The great thing is that we are already experts in developing a treatment regimen that is suitable for your needs.
