Stubborn fat is a part of many people's lives. Sometimes even stringent dieting or hours logged at the gym aren't enough to conquer particularly tricky areas. Previously, liposuction was the only way to get rid of these fat deposits for good. But today, CoolSculpting, developed by Harvard researchers, safely reduces fat with only a single brief treatment session.1 Dr. Jason McWhirter is pleased to offer CoolSculpting to his patients in the Seton area interested in reducing fat on their abdomens, thighs, hips, and other areas of the body. Here, get the answers to some of the most common questions about this groundbreaking treatment.

To learn more about the benefits of CoolSculpting, request a consultation at our Seton Clinic. Or call us at (403) 523-1091, and one of our helpful staff members will schedule your appointment.

Meet Dr. McWhirter

Dr. Jason McWhirter has a passion for aesthetics centered on the principle that beautiful skin and physical wellness are intertwined. Through specialized expertise and a desire to truly listen, Dr. McWhirter consistently provides the results our patients love.

How is CoolSculpting different from liposuction?

Liposuction removes unwanted fat by manually suctioning it out of the body through a series of small incisions. CoolSculpting is different because it's completely non-invasive, which means it doesn't require breaking the skin. During a CoolSculpting procedure, Dr. McWhirter or a qualified member of his team draws up an unwanted bulge between 2 cooling panels. The panels then rapidly cool fat cells to the point where they die. Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting doesn't require anesthesia or sedation.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare for a CoolSculpting treatment?

No. CoolSculpting does not require you to fast or stop taking any medications. Once your appointment is scheduled, simply come as you are with a tablet or your favorite book to help you pass the time. Dr. McWhirter advises his CoolSculpting patients to wear loose-fitting clothing over the treated area, because CoolSculpting can cause mild swelling for several hours after the procedure.

Will CoolSculpting damage my skin?

No. Fat freezes at a higher temperature than skin and other tissues, which makes CoolSculpting safe and effective for targeted fat removal. CoolSculpting's proprietary technology targets only fat cells, leaving healthy tissue undamaged and untouched.1

How will I know if I need more than 1 procedure?

To achieve noticeable results, patients often need to undergo multiple treatments, but the number of sessions will depend on a person's body type and cosmetic goals. Although you may notice preliminary results emerge as soon as 3 weeks after your appointment, your final results will be achieved after about 2 or 3 months; however, this timeframe may vary between patients. If a few months or more have elapsed since your last treatment and you're unsatisfied with your results, you may contact ReNue to schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. McWhirter. He can evaluate your targeted treatment areas and make a recommendation to help give you the results you want.

Will I have any activity restrictions after CoolSculpting?

No. Because CoolSculpting doesn't require an incision, anesthesia, or sedation, you're free to resume your normal activities immediately. The targeted area may appear red and swollen for several hours, and some people report feeling sore, as if they'd worked out strenuously, for a day or so following the procedure. However, these side effects are typically mild and don't hinder patients from getting back to their normal activities.

What kind of results can I expect from CoolSculpting?

Most patients see a total fat loss of about 20% after a series of sessions.2 For many, this loss results in a "just right" appearance and also helps to motivate them to keep up good habits to maintain their new contours. CoolSculpting is especially suited to people who are already at or near healthy weights but wish to address smaller, specific pockets of fat. This makes CoolSculpting an excellent liposuction alternative for many Calgary-area men and women.

What if my fat comes back?

In adults, the number of fat cells we have is static. That means weight gain isn't caused by the addition of fat cells — it's caused by their expansion. Similarly, when we lose weight, it's the result of fat cells shrinking, not disappearing. The only way fat cells can be completely removed is through an extraction procedure, such as with CoolSculpting. The fat cells eliminated by CoolSculpting will never return.1 However, CoolSculpting will not prevent future weight gain — your remaining fat cells can still expand. Eating right and exercising are crucial to maintaining your results.
