How Do People Get Warts?

Warts develop when the skin reacts to an infection of one of the various strains of papillomavirus. Breaks in the skin, such as cuts, provide an easy entry point for the virus. Warts can appear as a single growth or in clusters on one or multiple areas.

Warts can be spread through direct and indirect contact. You can get a wart by touching someone else's wart or a surface that came into contact with a wart. If you already have a wart, picking at it, shaving over it, attempting to cut it off yourself or not treating it soon enough can allow warts to spread on your own body or to others.

How Do I Prevent Warts?

There is no guarantee that you can prevent warts from occurring, but you can improve your chances of not getting warts. Keep your skin healthy and moisturized so it doesn't crack. If you cut your skin, disinfect it and keep the wound covered initially.

Wash thoroughly and regularly. Avoid using public towels; use clean and unused towels or paper towels instead. At places such as public pools, showers and locker rooms, wear rubber-soled footwear such as flip-flops or water shoes.

If you already have warts, do not pick at them or try to remove them yourself.

Treatment Methods

Should you develop a wart, or if you have been unsuccessful using over-the-counter treatments on existing warts, Dr. McWhirter and the skincare specialists at ReNue can help you treat them. The removal of warts used to be a painful procedure that prevented a lot of people from getting treatment. But with advanced technology and state-of-the-art laser treatments, Dr. McWhirter can successfully and comfortably treat warts on all areas of the body. He also performs mole and skin tag removal when appropriate for interested clients.

Dr. McWhirter can target the wart using small heat pulses that effectively kill the virus by cutting off the blood and oxygen supply. Warts take time to resolve and may need repeated treatments every 2 weeks for best results.
